Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy, is a healthcare profession focused on helping individuals maintain, restore, and improve their physical function and mobility. It involves the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of physical impairments, disabilities, and pain through various therapeutic techniques. Physiotherapists work with patients to enhance their movement and overall quality of life, particularly after injury, surgery, or the onset of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological, or cardiovascular systems. Physiotherapy treatments often include exercises, manual therapy, education, and advice on injury prevention and physical activity. The ultimate goal of physiotherapy is to enable individuals to achieve optimal physical function, whether in daily activities, work, or sports.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists assess and provide hands-on treatment and exercise prescription to address movement dysfunction. Physiotherapists also plan and implement individual treatment programs to treat acute, subacute or chronic injuries, prevent physical disability and maximize function. Treatment may include education, targeted exercises, joint mobilizations, soft tissue release, ‘dry-needling’, taping or bracing, electrotherapeutic modalities including TENS, interferential current, muscle stim or ultrasound, or the prescription of mobility equipment. Physiotherapists graduate with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy (MPT) from universities across Canada. Physiotherapists are licensed by the College of Healthcare Professionals of BC, which maintains a rigorous code of ethics and high standards of continuing competency. Working closely with Physicians and other healthcare providers, Physiotherapists practice in private clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long term facilities, home care, industry and schools, as well as sports teams.
